Set up Splunk RUM for mobile and browser applications

Directions about how to get data in to Splunk Real User Monitoring (RUM). Learn how to instrument your applications and check that data is coming in.

Follow these steps to instrument your mobile and browser applications and get data into Splunk Real User Monitoring (RUM).

Generate your RUM access token in Splunk Observability Cloud

A RUM token is a public key used only during RUM ingestion. To create the RUM Token you need to be an administrator in Splunk Observability Cloud. For more information, see Create and manage organization access tokens using Splunk Observability Cloud.

Follow these steps to create a RUM access token for your organization.

  1. Log in to Splunk Observability Cloud.

  2. Select Settings > Access Tokens.

  3. Select New Token and enter a name.

  4. Select RUM Token.

  5. Copy the RUM token to your clipboard.

  6. Select Ok.

Manage your RUM access token

Manage RUM license consumption across your applications or business units by allocating monthly session limits to RUM tokens. Follow these steps to add a session limit to a RUM token:

  1. Select Settings > Access Tokens.

  2. Select the RUM token that you want to edit. This opens the token detail page.

  3. Select the token actions menu (⋮), and select Manage limits.

  4. In the Manage limits menu, add the new session limits.

  5. Save your token.

After creating your token, view usage statistics for your token sessions on the Access Tokens page. Alternatively, select the token and view the Usage summary tab to monitor session usage.

Monitor RUM access token usage

Splunk Observability Cloud monitors the usage of all access tokens, whether or not they have user-configured limits.

To monitor access token usage:

  1. In the Splunk Observability Cloud main menu, select Settings, then Access tokens.

  2. In the table of tokens, view the Usage Status column.

The Usage Status column represents the overall usage of the token and can display a status of Above limit, Close to limit, or Below limit. Token status is Close to Limit if the usage of any of its limits is greater than or equal to 90%.

For example, consider a scenario where you set the Infrastructure Monitoring host and custom metric limits. If the host limit is exceeded even if the custom metrics limit is not, the Usage Status for the token will be Above limit.

You can view additional usage details with the following actions:

  • Hover over the Usage Status of a token to display the current usage of each limit.

  • Select the row for a token, then the Usage limits tab to display the configured usage limits, alert recipients, and advanced settings.

  • Select the row for a token, then the Usage summary tab. This displays a Usage Limit table and a Usage Trends chart with the number of ingest levels in the past seven days for each usage limit. The chart displays data at a one-hour resolution.
Note: This tab is only available if API requests are using the token to send data.

Get data in

Follow these steps to instrument your application:

Note: RUM access tokens are publicly visible in the client-side code.

Check that your data is coming in

To start sending data to Splunk RUM, you need to first have user activity on your application.

Then, follow these steps to check that your data is in your Splunk RUM for Mobile instance:

  1. Log in to Splunk Observability Cloud.

  2. Select Digital Experience, then Real user monitoring Overview.

  3. In the Source menu, select Mobile or Browser.

  4. Check that data appears in the RUM dashboard.
